Styling Simple Tops: Dressed Up and Down

Simple tops are a versatile addition to any wardrobe, allowing you to effortlessly dress them up with statement accessories or dress them down for a more casual look. Their minimalistic design also makes them timeless, so you can wear them year after year without ever going out of style.

I don’t know about you, but I strive to create a capsule wardrobe. So I like to add staple pieces to my closet that I can easily style for many occasions. Simple tops are one of my favorite styles to add to my closet. These are pieces that you can style from day to night, all year round. We’re going to inspire you to style, the simple tops in your wardrobe, dressed up and down.

  • Jeans- One of the easiest ways to style a simple top, or any top for that matter is with denim. This gives it a more laid-back feel. For those casual days when you’re shopping downtown with girlfriends, heading to class, or whatever it may be, jeans are always a good idea. If you have a solid pair of black jeans or a pair of colored denim, that have no destruction, this is an easy way to create more of a business casual feel, while not looking overly dressy. The Loretta Flutter Sleeve top is a great option to style with denim. Depending on how you accessorize it, it's a versatile top that will carry you from day to night.

  • Trousers- A lot of times we think of trousers as a workwear piece, that must be styled with a traditional blouse. That isn’t true. While that may have been the case years ago, times have changed. You can wear trousers for any occasion. And you can style them with a graphic tee, a T-shirt, or a traditional blouse. The options really are endless. Wear what reflects your personal style. If you’re going to brunch, take that simple top in your wardrobe, like Breezy Smocked Blouse, and tuck it into a pair of trousers for an elevated look. A trouser just gives any look more of a chic, put together feel.

  • Under a slip dress- if you want to create more of a layered look, you can take a simple long sleeve top in your wardrobe, or even a mock neck tank and layer under a simple satin slip dress. This is right on trend right now with all the 90s styles coming back. And it’s a great way for you to take multiple staples in your wardrobe and create different luxe with them. this is a way that you can take the simple tops in your wardrobe and dress them up a little bit for more of a girls night out or date night.

  • Tucked and untucked- In my opinion, wearing a top untucked, creates more of a casual laid-back feel. Where as tucking in a top whether it’s a blouse or a simple top, creates a more put together and dressed up look. So you can take a basic T-shirt in your wardrobe and tuck it into denim or trousers to give it a dressy feel. Or if you’re looking for something more laid-back style a T-shirt untucked with joggers for that overall casual look. The Cherry on Top Blouse is the perfect example of this!

  • Skirts- Summer is here and skirts are a great option for those warmer days. Take a simple, mock neck tank, like the Back to the Basics Top, and tuck it into a fun printed skirt for a cute summer workwear look. You can just as easily style a T-shirt in your wardrobe, with a satin miniskirt and sneakers for a weekend exploring downtown Ann Arbor.
