Our Story

Welcome to the Ferne Fam! Thanks for visiting us here – I am so grateful to everyone that has supported Ferne and learned about this journey of the business. 

My name is Laura, I am the owner and founder of Ferne Boutique. My story of how this business started is pretty interesting! I was at a young professionals conference in April 2015 in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. I was attending this conference while working in a corporate sales job, because I really wanted to meet more young people in the Great Lakes Bay Region. At the end of the conference a familiar speaker got up on stage and I was expecting him to give his normal speech. Instead, he showed us motivational videos about life. YouTube videos from young kids, talking about how anything is possible. Saying you just have to believe in yourself, don’t let your life pass you by. I was immediately crying and just felt like I was meant to do more with my life, my time and an overall higher purpose.

An idea instantly came to me that I should start a women’s boutique, because living in Bay City, MI we didn’t have many options available. I really didn’t have any idea how I thought of it, it was just something that came to me in that moment of emotion. I was always driving to Somerset Mall or Twelve Oaks Mall, or shopping online for clothing. I had the idea, but had no idea how to make any of it happen... but I just started figuring things out on my own and learning how to do things to make this happen.

I found a storefront to rent in Bay City, right outside my office at the time. Things just started happening to make this idea real, and it just made me realize this was the right direction for me. I opened the first Ferne Boutique August 6, 2015 and quickly could tell that women locally were really needing this type of store. One that makes you feel comfortable, confident, and excited to shop. I always focused on the community and building relationships with customers because that is truly who I am!

After one year at our first location, we quickly realized that Ferne needed a larger space and potentially more locations in Michigan. I always envisioned Ferne being in multiple places, where a boutique like Ferne didn’t exist.

It is truly an honor to be here and to meet each and every one of our customers and members of the community! Thank you for continuing to choose Ferne, we love having the opportunity to style you for all of your event and occasions!

We currently have two brick and mortar locations in Michigan. They are located in Ann Arbor and Bay City. Plus, we have a third location, our amazing website!
