Let's get to know about Marisa Kimmel Photography
I started shooting self portraits in 2014 shortly after moving to Chicago and cutting all of my hair off. Losing my hair to alopecia lead to a road of not feeling like I was beautiful. Putting myself in front of the camera showed me that I was still beautiful without hair. I wanted to help others see their own beauty and started to take photos of others in 2017. I’ve been shooting and creating ever since!
I officially started my business in January of 2020. I started my business because I really just love having a hand in helping people show themselves to the world. I am based out of Metro Detroit in Hazel Park. I will shoot anywhere! I love being challenged and it’s my favorite thing to just walk around finding little secret perfect spots for photos.
Marisa's dreams and inspiration
I feel as if I’m currently living my dream and I hope I can just continue to shoot and grow in my photography.
While I’m driving I am always scoping out photo locations and from there I think of what colors would look good in that location or time of day would work best. I also can scroll on Pinterest for hours and hours, filling my brain with everything that I come across!
What type of photography and shoots does Marisa do
I’m a portrait photographer. Where there are people, I will shoot! Currently my favorite type of shoot are branding sessions. Because it’s so much more than what you’re selling to your customer, you get to share who you are and your why and that’s always inspiring.

What Marisa has learned since starting her business
Comparing yourself to people who are on year 8 when you are on day 300 will drive you completely insane. When I start to compare myself to others I take a little social media break and do something in my business that inspires me so I don’t continue to feel like I need to be competing with so and so. It gives me a refresh and restart!
